Marking of Leased Vehicles
Government-leased vehicles must be clearly identified with nonpermanent markings, and contractor identification must not imply government endorsement or advertising.
Overview
FAR 52.208-6, "Marking of Leased Vehicles," establishes requirements for the identification of motor vehicles leased by the government, except those leased in foreign countries. The clause allows the government to apply nonpermanent, removable markings or decals to leased vehicles for agency identification. It also permits contractors to use temporary placards for vehicle identification, provided these do not reference the contractor in a way that could be seen as government endorsement or advertising.
Key Rules
- Government Markings
- The government may place nonpermanent, removable markings or decals on leased vehicles to identify the using agency.
- Contractor Placards
- Contractors may use temporary placards for vehicle identification, but these must not reference the contractor in a manner that could be interpreted as government endorsement or advertising.
Responsibilities
- Contracting Officers: Must include this clause in applicable solicitations and contracts for leasing motor vehicles (except in foreign countries).
- Contractors: Must allow government markings and ensure any contractor placards comply with the restrictions on advertising and endorsement.
- Agencies: Must ensure markings used are nonpermanent and removable without damaging the vehicle.
Practical Implications
- This clause ensures clear identification of government-leased vehicles while protecting contractors from unintended government endorsement. Contractors must be careful with the content of any identification placards to avoid compliance issues. Failure to comply could result in contract disputes or removal of noncompliant placards.
