SOLE SOURCE REQUEST TO PURCHASE ThermoFisher Scientific Helios 5 Hydra CX DualBeam System: Extreme High Resolution (XHR) Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) equipped with a switchable multiple-ion-species (Xe, Ar, O, N) inductively coupleMississippi State University is seeking to procure a ThermoFisher Scientific Helios 5 Hydra CX DualBeam System, an Extreme High Resolution Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with a switchable multi-ion-species inductively coupled plasma focused ion beam capable of using Xe, Ar, O, and N ions. This is a sole source procurement justified by the unique integration of the EMPAD-2 detector and the multi-ion PFIB system, which only ThermoFisher Scientific currently offers in a single platform, and because the system is essential for automated TEM lamella preparation that prevents artifacts in sensitive multi-material workflows. The requirement includes the Helios 5 Hydra CX system, a Spectra 200 S/TEM system, advanced software packages including AutoTEM 5, Autoscrip, Auto Slice and View 5, Maps3, and Avizo, two uninterruptible power supplies, and preferred service agreements extending two years beyond the initial one-year factory warranty. The total negotiated contract value is $5,186,011, reflecting a 55.85% discount off the list price of $11,745,479. The system must be delivered and installed in Mississippi, with service agreements guaranteeing 48-hour targeted onsite labor response and unlimited labor hours for the extended warranty period. The solicitation is open under number 9250-26-R-RFIN-00045, with submissions due by July 1, 2026, at 00:00:00 CST, and objections to the sole source determination must be submitted in writing to Jennifer Mayfield with the subject line “Sole Source Objection.” If the university determines another viable source exists, the procurement will be reissued as a competitive bid.

The NIA is investigating the involvement of localization and quantification of intracellular molecules that require sub-micron resolution for visualization. Currently, laser scanning confocal microscopy is the current method that meets the resolution. The LSM 710 is capable of accommodating both UV and IR lasers on the same system. The LSM 710 3 spectral detection channels, 6 laser lines, control electronics, ZEN software, PC and 30 monitor, 12 month warranty. The LSM 710 incorporates a dual wheel main beamsplitter which allows for over 50 excitation filters. The LSM 710 also uses a 34-channel quasar detector consisting of calibrated 32-element array PMT and two flanking single PMT detectors. Delivery is 12-14 weeks ARO.
