Contract Modification

What is Contract Modification?

A contract modification changes a contract under the applicable authority and procedures. FAR 43.103 distinguishes bilateral modifications, signed by the contractor and contracting officer, from unilateral modifications signed by the contracting officer. The type and authority depend on the action.

How to use it

Identify the changed terms, effective date, authorized signatory, and effect on scope, price, funding, or schedule. Update the delivery and financial records that depend on those terms. Do not treat an informal discussion as an executed modification.

Example

An authorized modification changes a performance period. The contracts owner confirms the terms, then coordinates the schedule and financial updates. The team retains the prior version and the executed change for history.

Reference

Federal Acquisition Regulation 43.103.
