Brookfield Zoo Chicago is dedicated to advancing animal welfare, conservation science, and public education through the design, maintenance, and enhancement of its specialized captive habitats and visitor infrastructure. Its core mission centers on creating biologically authentic, safe, and sustainable environments for non-human species while ensuring operational resilience and regulatory compliance. Strategic priorities include habitat modernization, structural integrity of animal enclosures, and the integration of engineering expertise to support complex zoological needs. Key programs focus on long-term facility stewardship, geotechnical safety assessments, and the upkeep of climate-controlled enclosures critical to species survival.
The agency procures specialized construction and professional services to support its mission-critical infrastructure. It frequently engages in soliciting engineering services for site investigations and structural assessments, commercial building construction for habitat expansions or renovations, and long-term plumbing and HVAC service agreements to maintain precise environmental controls. Contract structures typically involve competitive solicitations, including Requests for Proposals and Requests for Qualifications, with an emphasis on technical competency over price alone.
Primary procurement activity is concentrated in NAICS 541330 (Engineering Services), 236220 (Commercial and Institutional Building Construction), and 238220 (Plumbing, Heating, and Air-Conditioning Contractors). These reflect a deliberate focus on technical precision and durability in habitat infrastructure. The agency does not utilize set-asides and appears to prioritize vendor qualifications, experience with sensitive environmental systems, and proven track records in institutional facility management over socioeconomic preferences.
Brookfield Zoo Chicago operates as an independent entity under the Illinois state system, with no formal sub-departmental structure indicated. It functions as a public-facing conservation and education institution, managing a single large-scale facility in Illinois. Its procurement vehicles are primarily competitive solicitations for professional services and construction contracts, reflecting a model centered on mission-driven infrastructure investment rather than commodity purchasing.
