What does Division Of Infor Intelligent Systems do?

The Division of Intelligent Systems, operating under the National Science Foundation, is dedicated to advancing foundational research in artificial intelligence, automated reasoning, and adaptive computing systems. Its core mission centers on enabling next-generation computational frameworks that support scientific discovery, data-driven experimentation, and intelligent automation across academic and national research domains. Strategic priorities include the development of secure, scalable software infrastructure for research workflows, the integration of AI-driven analytical tools into experimental platforms, and the modernization of cyber-physical systems that underpin large-scale scientific initiatives. The agency prioritizes innovation in algorithmic design, system interoperability, and secure software deployment to empower researchers with intelligent, responsive computational environments. Procurement activity is narrowly focused on custom computer programming services, reflecting a deliberate investment in bespoke software solutions tailored to specialized research needs. Contracts are typically structured as combined requirements, allowing for integrated development, testing, and deployment of mission-critical applications. The agency favors agile, performance-based acquisition approaches that support iterative refinement and technical adaptability in response to evolving scientific demands. Industry engagement is concentrated in the custom computer programming services sector (NAICS 541511), with no evidence of set-aside preferences or diversity targeting in available procurement records. Vendor relationships appear to be built around technical excellence, domain-specific expertise in research computing, and proven ability to deliver secure, maintainable software under complex scientific constraints. As a specialized unit within the National Science Foundation, the Division of Intelligent Systems operates without a fixed geographic footprint, serving a nationwide network of academic and research institutions. It functions as a technical enabler within NSF’s broader mission to propel U.S. leadership in science and engineering through targeted investment in intelligent software systems. Procurement is conducted through standard federal contracting vehicles, emphasizing flexibility and technical rigor over volume or scale.
