What does Georgia Department of Agriculture do?

The Georgia Department of Agriculture safeguards the state’s agricultural resources and ensures the safety and integrity of food systems through targeted procurement of specialized services and equipment. Its core mission centers on protecting Georgia’s agricultural economy by managing pest control, supporting sustainable forestry practices, ensuring food manufacturing compliance, and maintaining public-facing agricultural infrastructure. Strategic priorities include safeguarding native ecosystems from invasive species, promoting safe food production, and preserving the operational integrity of state-run agricultural markets. Key programs focus on biosecurity, agricultural education, and infrastructure resilience, with procurement activities aligned to enforce regulatory standards and public health protections. Procurement patterns reflect a focus on niche, mission-critical services rather than broad commodity acquisition. The agency consistently solicits specialized landscaping for agricultural facilities, forestry support for invasive species management, frozen food manufacturing for state-supervised product standards, and commercial refrigeration systems to maintain cold chain integrity. Contracts are typically issued as open solicitations without set-asides, indicating a preference for technical capability over socioeconomic targeting. Procurement vehicles appear to favor direct competitive bidding for specialized technical services requiring certified expertise. The agency primarily targets NAICS codes related to agricultural support services and food safety infrastructure, including 115310 (forestry support), 561730 (landscaping), 311412 (specialty food manufacturing), and 333415 (commercial refrigeration equipment). There is no evidence of set-aside preferences or diversity-focused contracting initiatives; vendor selection appears driven by technical qualifications, regulatory compliance, and proven operational experience in agricultural environments. As a state-level department under Georgia’s executive branch, the Georgia Department of Agriculture operates statewide with no centralized physical headquarters listed. It functions independently within the Georgia State Departments structure and utilizes standard state procurement mechanisms for competitive solicitations, primarily engaging vendors with domain-specific expertise in agricultural science, food safety, and environmental management.
