What does Georgia Department of Defense do?

The Georgia Department of Defense supports the state’s emergency response, infrastructure resilience, and military readiness operations through strategic procurement of critical equipment, construction, and support services. Its core mission centers on maintaining operational capability for the Georgia National Guard and state emergency management systems, with a strong emphasis on mobility, logistics, and facility integrity. Key priorities include roadway and bridge infrastructure maintenance, industrial vehicle procurement for tactical and support fleets, and facility management services that ensure readiness of military and state-owned properties. The agency actively invests in engineering, pavement preservation, and site preparation to sustain transportation networks critical to rapid deployment and civil support missions. Procurement patterns reveal a heavy reliance on construction and industrial equipment contracts, particularly highway and bridge construction, industrial truck and tractor manufacturing, and site preparation services. Administrative and facility management functions—including nonresidential property management, janitorial services, and administrative support—are consistently procured to sustain day-to-day operations across multiple installations. Contract vehicles are predominantly open solicitations with no set-asides, indicating a preference for competitive, performance-based awards sourced from qualified general contractors and specialized service providers. The agency’s primary procurement targets include NAICS 333924 (industrial machinery), 237310 (highway construction), and 561312 (property management), reflecting its operational need for durable equipment, infrastructure maintenance, and facility oversight. Engineering and environmental consulting services are regularly engaged to support compliance and project planning. No set-aside preferences are indicated, suggesting a focus on technical capability and cost-effectiveness over socioeconomic targeting. Vendor relationships are transactional but recurring, with contractors often re-engaged for multi-year infrastructure and maintenance cycles. Organized under the Georgia State Departments, the agency operates statewide with no single headquarters location, coordinating activities across National Guard armories, training sites, and emergency response hubs. It utilizes standard federal and state procurement vehicles, including competitive solicitations and request-for-quotations, to acquire goods and services aligned with mission-critical readiness requirements.
