What does Ohio Corrections Training Academy do?

The Ohio Corrections Training Academy is dedicated to enhancing the professional readiness and operational effectiveness of correctional staff through targeted training and specialized equipment support. Its core mission centers on equipping instructors and facilities with the tools, apparel, and infrastructure necessary to deliver high-fidelity, scenario-based correctional training. Strategic priorities include maintaining a safe and functional training environment, ensuring instructor safety through protective gear and secure facilities, and modernizing logistical support systems such as vehicle-mounted equipment for facility maintenance and weather response. The agency prioritizes competency-based learning and operational readiness, aligning procurement decisions with the practical demands of correctional instruction and field simulation. Procurement patterns reveal a focus on mission-critical support items rather than large-scale infrastructure. The agency regularly sources specialized training materials, protective apparel for instructors, industrial utility vehicles equipped with snow removal systems, and secure locking mechanisms for training facility access control. Contracts are typically issued as direct solicitations without set-asides, indicating a preference for open competition based on technical suitability and operational reliability rather than socioeconomic preferences. Primary procurement activity centers on NAICS 611430 for professional training services, 315210 for custom-fitted protective apparel, 333924 for industrial utility vehicles, and 423610 for electrical and security hardware. These categories reflect a deliberate alignment with hands-on training needs, personal protective equipment, and facility security infrastructure. The agency maintains a vendor-agnostic approach, selecting suppliers based on product specification compliance, durability under high-use conditions, and timely delivery. Operated under the Ohio Department of Corrections, the Ohio Corrections Training Academy functions as a centralized training hub with statewide influence, serving correctional personnel across Ohio’s facilities. It relies on direct solicitations and standard government procurement vehicles to acquire mission-specific goods and services, ensuring alignment with state safety and operational standards. The agency’s structure is lean and functionally focused, with procurement driven by immediate training and safety requirements rather than broad administrative needs.
