What does Oklahoma Historical Society do?

The Oklahoma Historical Society is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and enhancing public access to Oklahoma’s cultural heritage through the stewardship of historical sites, artifacts, and educational programs. Its core mission centers on maintaining and improving the physical infrastructure of state-owned historical properties to ensure their long-term viability and public engagement. Strategic priorities include facility preservation, structural integrity upgrades, and the modernization of visitor-facing infrastructure, all aimed at supporting museum operations and community outreach. Key initiatives focus on sustainable maintenance of historic buildings, accessibility improvements, and the integration of durable, low-maintenance materials that align with conservation standards. The agency procures a range of construction, maintenance, and facilities support services essential to sustaining its historic properties. Contracts frequently involve structural repairs, exterior enhancements, and operational upkeep, reflecting a hands-on approach to heritage conservation. Procurements are typically issued as competitive solicitations without set-asides, indicating a focus on technical capability and compliance with preservation guidelines over socioeconomic preferences. Primary procurement activity aligns with NAICS codes for museum operations, commercial building construction, fabricated structural metal manufacturing, and facilities support services. These categories reveal a clear emphasis on physical infrastructure—such as signage, concrete work, metal fabrication, and LED maintenance—that directly supports the functionality and safety of museum and historic site environments. Vendor relationships prioritize technical expertise in historic preservation, structural integrity, and facility management, with no indication of targeted diversity contracting. As a state agency under the Oklahoma State Departments, the Oklahoma Historical Society operates statewide to manage and protect cultural resources. It relies on open solicitations and direct procurement vehicles to acquire specialized services, ensuring alignment with preservation standards while maintaining operational continuity across its network of historical sites.
