What does Pacific Northwest Research Station do?

The Pacific Northwest Research Station, part of the U.S. Forest Service under the Department of Agriculture, is dedicated to advancing forest science and sustainable ecosystem management through field-based research, monitoring, and data-driven analysis. Its core mission centers on supporting forest inventory and analysis programs, ecological restoration, and forest health assessment across the Pacific Northwest. Strategic priorities include long-term forest monitoring, seed deployment trials, and invasive species management, all enabled by targeted fieldwork services and scientific consulting. The agency prioritizes research infrastructure maintenance, including HVAC, electrical, and building systems, to sustain operational continuity in remote and field-based laboratories. Procurement patterns reveal a strong reliance on support activities for forestry, including tree tagging, forest inventory, and ecological data collection, alongside essential facility maintenance services such as janitorial, landscaping, and plumbing. Contract structures frequently combine solicitations and set-asides to ensure continuity in long-term field operations, with a preference for task-order and indefinite-delivery vehicles that accommodate fluctuating seasonal research demands. The agency primarily targets NAICS 115310 (Support Activities for Forestry), 561720 (Janitorial Services), and 561730 (Landscaping Services), reflecting its need for both scientific field support and facility upkeep. A significant majority of contracts are awarded through Small Business Administration (SBA) set-asides, indicating a deliberate commitment to engaging small, local, and specialized vendors with expertise in ecological services and rural infrastructure maintenance. Vendor relationships are built on technical proficiency in forest science support and proven capacity for field logistics. Organized under the Forest Service, the Pacific Northwest Research Station operates across multiple field sites and research stations in the western U.S., with no single headquarters location. It utilizes a mix of GSA schedules, interagency agreements, and competitive solicitations to procure specialized services that align with its mission-critical research and operational needs.
