What does Police Mounted Unit do?

The Police Mounted Unit of the City of Columbus is dedicated to supporting law enforcement operations through specialized equine and tactical resources, ensuring public safety through mobile, visible, and adaptable policing capabilities. Core priorities include maintaining the operational readiness of mounted patrols by procuring critical equipment for both personnel and horses, integrating modern technology to enhance situational awareness, and sustaining logistical infrastructure for field deployment. Key initiatives focus on equine health and nutrition, protective gear for officers, and the acquisition of tactical electronics and ordnance accessories that align with dynamic public safety missions. The unit emphasizes reliability, durability, and mission-specific functionality in all procurements, reflecting its unique hybrid role combining traditional mounted policing with contemporary law enforcement technology. The agency procures a diverse range of goods, including medical-grade horse supplements, gas mask pouches, barcode scanners, electronic computing hardware, and small arms accessories. Procurements are typically structured as direct solicitations with no set-asides, indicating a focus on performance, compliance, and rapid acquisition over socioeconomic preferences. Contracts are awarded based on technical suitability and operational necessity rather than vendor size or certification status. Primary procurement activity centers on manufacturing sectors including surgical appliance and supplies manufacturing (for protective gear), small arms ordnance manufacturing (for suppressors), computer peripheral equipment manufacturing (for field electronics), and showcase and locker manufacturing (for storage systems). Unusual but consistent purchases—such as band saws and musical artists—suggest unorthodox operational needs, possibly tied to training, public engagement, or facility maintenance. The Police Mounted Unit operates under the City of Columbus Department of Public Safety, with no formal geographic sub-divisions. It utilizes open solicitations and direct award mechanisms to acquire mission-critical equipment, maintaining a lean, operationally focused procurement structure designed for agility and field responsiveness.
