What does Recreation & Parks/Forestry Division do?

The Recreation & Parks/Forestry Division of the City of Columbus is tasked with maintaining and enhancing the city’s public green spaces, urban forests, and recreational infrastructure through targeted capital improvements and operational support. Its core mission centers on sustainable land management, public safety in park environments, and the preservation of civic amenities through infrastructure resilience. Strategic priorities include stormwater management, tree canopy expansion, facility modernization, and the integration of climate-adaptive design in parks and forestry assets. Key programs focus on integrated water system maintenance, hardscape rehabilitation, and energy-efficient lighting upgrades to ensure long-term public access and environmental stewardship. The agency frequently procures specialized construction and maintenance services to support its physical infrastructure, with recurring demand for roofing, plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning systems, as well as concrete and flooring work for public buildings and recreational facilities. It also consistently seeks landscaping, tree care support, and water and sewer line maintenance services to sustain the ecological and functional integrity of its managed properties. Contracts are typically awarded through competitive solicitation processes, with limited use of pre-negotiated vehicles, indicating a preference for project-specific bidding over blanket purchase agreements. Primary procurement activity aligns with NAICS codes for forestry support services, commercial building construction, roofing, and plumbing contractors, reflecting a focus on hands-on infrastructure upkeep. The agency also engages electrical wholesalers and building inspection services to ensure code compliance and system reliability. While no set-aside preferences are indicated, vendor relationships appear to favor established local contractors with proven expertise in municipal-scale maintenance and environmental compliance. Organized under the City of Columbus, the division operates citywide to manage parks, trails, forests, and recreational facilities without regional subdivisions. It relies on direct solicitations and open procurement channels, prioritizing technical competency and service reliability over formalized contracting frameworks. Its operations are grounded in public safety, environmental sustainability, and long-term asset preservation.
