The South Carolina Recreation and Tourism Department of Parks is dedicated to the preservation, maintenance, and enhancement of the state's public recreational lands and tourism infrastructure. Its core mission focuses on the stewardship of state parks and welcome centers, with strategic priorities centered on facility modernization, environmental conservation, and the restoration of public assets following natural disasters. Key initiatives include the development of trail systems, the upkeep of campground amenities, and the structural rehabilitation of historic and administrative buildings to ensure safe and accessible public access.
Procurement patterns indicate a heavy reliance on professional design and construction services. The agency frequently solicits architectural and engineering services to support capital improvement projects, alongside comprehensive general contracting for commercial building and heavy civil engineering. Recurring requirements include specialized facility maintenance such as roofing, landscaping, and solid waste collection, as well as the acquisition of specialized equipment including boats and industrial machinery for park operations.
The agency primarily targets vendors within the architectural, heavy construction, and specialty trade sectors. Frequent procurement activity is seen under NAICS codes for architectural services, commercial building construction, and other heavy and civil engineering construction. They also engage niche providers for forestry support, remediation services, and site preparation to manage the diverse ecological and structural needs of their various park locations.
Operating under the state of South Carolina, the agency manages a geographically dispersed portfolio of assets including state parks, welcome centers, and historic sites. Its operational scope extends across various counties, requiring a procurement strategy that supports localized projects ranging from beach boardwalk repairs and sand replenishment to the renovation of residential and comfort station facilities.
