This presolicitation, issued by the Department of Defense under solicitation number W58RGZ-06-R-XXXX, seeks a High Capacity Feed System and an upgraded mount for the M240H machine gun used in the CH-47 Cargo Helicopter Self Defense Armament Subsystem. The primary objective is to replace the legacy M24 mount to support a 400-round ammunition capacity capable of sustaining a rapid rate of fire for two minutes without jamming. The new system must feature a feed system that connects or disconnects within five seconds, a collection system for casings and links that does not overflow or obstruct aircraft operations, and full backward compatibility with existing M24 installations. The upgraded mount must be egressable and stowable, allowing it to pivot away from cabin door entrances with the weapon attached and lock securely in a muzzle-down position. To improve the field of fire, the mount must shift the machine gun four to six inches further outboard. Additional technical constraints require the entire mount and arm assembly, including the magazine and cradle, to weigh no more than 65 pounds and be removable via a quick-release pin. The system must not interfere with the operation of cabin doors or the movement of combat troops entering or exiting the aircraft.

The CH-47, Cargo Helicopter Self Defense Armament Subsystem (CH SDAS), employs the M240H machine gun which in turn utilizes the M24 gun mount. Description M24 Mount: The CH47 SDAS is installed in the cabin window on the left side and in the right door of the aircraft using the M24 mount. The outboard face of the pintles provides depression stops for the gun. The M24 inboard surface is shaped t o function as a cam. CAM Followers installed with the pintle combine with the cam to provide elevation stops. Current: The M240H machine gun utilizes the legacy M24 mount, which has an ammo can that has a 200 round capacity mounted on the M240H machine gun along with a collection system. The current ammunition can/collection system and M24 mount will not support a 400 round ammunition capacity nor egressability/stowability requirement. Crewmembers must remove and replace two ammo cans in a two minute period to meet the two minute 400 round requirement. Requirement: There is an operational requirement to meet a High Capacity Feed System (HCFS), which will allow the mount to support a 400 round capacity for two minutes at the weapons rapid rate of fire without failure of jamming/interruption. The feed sy stem must have the ability to be connected and disconnected from the M240 feed tray within 5 seconds. The HCFS will not interfere with the operation of the lower or upper cabin door. The HCFS shall be backward compatible with existing M24 mount installat ion, it shall be able to convert back to original configuration. The collection system must be able to collect the casings and links from two minutes of firing at the sustained rate of 400 rounds without overflowing or causing a stoppage. The collection system cannot interfere with the operation of the gun. Additional ly, the casing collection system cannot interfere with entering or exiting the aircraft by combat troops, nor can it interfere with the operation of the aircraft. Mount Requirements: The mount/arm must have the ability to be egressable/stowable such that it can be disconnected and pivoted away, such as a bifold/break in half for easy egress/ingress, from the cabin door entrance with the M240H machine gun attached. At the end of the pivot, the mount/arm must have a locking mechanism to secure it to the aircraft. The M240H machine gun will also have a locking mechanism that causes the M240H machine gun to be stowed in the muzzle down position. The mount/arm will no t interfere with operation of the cabin door while in a stowed position. The mount/arm, to include magazine/cradle shall weigh no more than 65 lbs. The mount/arm shall be removable by uninstalling a quick release pin. The mount/arm must have the ability to move the M240H machine gun 4-6 inches further outboard on the aircraft, to be able to provide a better Field of Fire (FOF).
