2026 San Francisco Bay USACE Dredge Monitoring Study

The Department of Fish and Wildlife has authorized Novo Aquatic Sciences, Inc. to conduct sampling activities in San Francisco Bay during the 2026 dredging season to monitor aquatic species captured in dredge material produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Under Fish and Game Code Section 2081(a), the permit allows the collection and temporary possession of longfin smelt, delta smelt, coho salmon, Chinook salmon, and white sturgeon for educational and assessment purposes. Sampling will occur between June and November 2026 using hand collection methods, dip nets, and direct extraction from crab baskets and hopper units on dredging vessels. The goal is to evaluate the bycatch of these protected and sensitive species during routine harbor maintenance operations, contributing to broader ecological monitoring efforts. All activities must adhere strictly to the conditions outlined in the permit, ensuring minimal impact and proper handling of the specimens. The project is managed through Region 7 - Marine, Monterey, with Dylan Inskeep serving as the primary point of contact and Steven Novotny listed as the project applicant.
