CalNRG Operating, LLC has received approval from the California Department of Conservation, Geologic Energy Management Division to rework the Scarlett 4 well, API number 0411100834, located in the Montalvo West Oil Field in Ventura County, California. The project involves reworking a well that has been active since 1962 and is expected to take approximately 10 to 15 days to complete. Because the well is situated on an existing well pad with established access roads, the project requires no new land disturbance, no new facilities, and no changes to existing infrastructure. Produced water will be used for well work via existing lines, while fresh water will be brought in specifically for cement blending. The project is located within a developed oil field in an environmentally sensitive area defined by its proximity to the ocean and its location within the Coastal Zone. Despite this, the project is expected to have no significant environmental effects, as it involves no vegetation disturbance and no increase in flowline capacity. Operations will continue to comply with Senate Bill 1137 regulations for wells in health protection zones. Consequently, CalGEM has determined that the project is exempt from full environmental review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act, citing various statutory and categorical exemptions.
