Federal Prison Industries, Inc. (FPI) has established a partnership with Allied Healthcare Service, LTD (ALLIED) to provide medical transcription services through inmate labor. Under this agreement, ALLIED will train inmate workers in transcription and manage the daily workflow received from their customers, while FPI will supervise and oversee the inmates' work. The transcription services involve converting voice recordings from healthcare professionals into electronic documents, and measures are in place to ensure inmates have no access to personal information about individuals. This arrangement allows these services, which would traditionally be outsourced internationally, to be performed domestically within the scope of FPI’s authorized commercial activities. The contract is aligned with public notices previously issued by FPI regarding their authority to engage in commercial market services. These notices were published in the Commerce Business Daily in late 1998 and early 1999, affirming the compliance of this partnership within established regulations. The Department of Justice oversees this initiative, with FPI’s office based in Washington, DC, serving as the administrative hub. Interested parties can address inquiries to FPI’s Chief Administrative Officer for Research, Activation, and Corporate Support, reflecting the transparency and oversight incorporated into the project.
