The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plans to award a purchase order on a sole source basis to J-Kem Scientific for a J-Kem SPE Workstation and Controller, citing FAR provisions for limited competition. The procurement is justified because the J-KEM SPE reactor offers unique capabilities, including automating and controlling the elution of 24 sample columns simultaneously with individualized regulation and pressure programming, monitored through integrated sensors. This system, when paired with the Eclipse workstation and custom software provided exclusively by J-Kem, allows for fully automated column preparation and sample processing, significantly reducing the need for analyst intervention. Since J-Kem is the original developer of the hardware and software, this contract is not open for competitive proposals. Interested firms capable of providing similar technology are encouraged to notify the Contracting Officer in writing within 15 days from the synopsis publication, though the final decision on whether to pursue competition lies solely with the government. Inquiries can be directed to the CDC’s designated contract specialists. The need for this specific equipment and software integration underscores the CDC’s aim to improve laboratory automation through this specialized, sole source procurement.
