AI Contract Overview

Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California, is offering a partnering opportunity for a novel closed-cell polyisocyanurate foam composition known as TEPIC, which demonstrates high compressive strength at elevated temperatures of at least 190°C. This innovative material maintains much of its mechanical properties despite exposure to such high heat. The composition is derived from a reaction between an isocyanate and an epoxide resin, catalyzed by a combination of a tertiary amine and a cyclic amine. The formulation's compressive strength is further enhanced by the inclusion of a significant portion of a non-reactive filler within the precursor polymer gel. The unique properties of this foam make it suitable for demanding applications such as rapid prototype tooling in composite lay-ups, hot embossing, and injection molding. Entities interested in exploring collaboration or licensing opportunities are invited to contact Sandia National Laboratories by mail or fax, referencing the specific notice title and date. This development represents a significant advancement in high-temperature resistant foam materials for industrial applications.

Full Description

Partnering Opportunity for a closed-cell polyisocyanurate foam composition capable of high compressive strength at temperatures of at least 190'C Sandia National Labs in Livermore, CA has developed TEPIC, a closed-cell polyisocyanurate foam composition capable of high compressive strength at temperatures of at least 190'C. The new composition further exhibits only a modest loss in conventional mechanical properties. The formulation of the present invention is based on the reaction product of an isocyanate and an epoxide resin catalyzed by a mixture of a tertiary amine and a cyclic amine. Compressive strength is augmented by incorporating a large fraction of a non-reactive filler component into the precursor polymer gel. Applications include rapid prototype tooling for composite lay-ups, hot embossing and injection molding. For further information, please respond by mail or fax to Alane Dulski at: Sandia National Laboratories, MS 0115, P.O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87106-0115. Fax: +1 (555) 000-0000.
