The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), through its Office of Acquisition, Logistics, and Construction, is hosting a Virtual Reverse Industry Day Suicide Prevention Grand Challenge Summit scheduled for February 2021. This event aims to address the critical issue of Veteran suicide, recognizing that many Veterans who die by suicide have no recent contact with VA health services. The summit will focus on enhancing the identification and risk screening of Veterans not engaged with VA healthcare, particularly minority and disadvantaged groups such as women Veterans, new Veterans, older Veterans, and Veterans from American Indian, Alaska Native, and African American communities. Key goals include improving early intervention and prevention services, promoting lethal means safety, understanding at-risk populations better, and expanding evidence-based treatment options both within the VA and in the wider community. The summit will also emphasize normalizing mental health warning signs and encouraging help-seeking, leveraging data from healthcare records and social media to optimize risk prediction and interventions. Additional objectives include supporting social connections during Veterans’ transition to civilian life, especially under the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, and educating the public on practical steps to reduce access to lethal means of suicide. An exploration of implementing winning solutions from a previous VA gun safety challenge is also planned. Registration information will be released via BetaSAM.gov by January 11, 2021. The contract specialist managing inquiries is Rosa Lachapel.
