The Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE) is a business and human rights ombud institution with a mandate to promote respect for human rights and responsible business conduct with Canadian companies operating outside of Canada in the garment, mining and oil/gas sectors. The CORE has a complaints mechanism through which impacted groups can submit complaints to the CORE about possible human rights abuses, and the CORE will work with complainants and Canadian companies to resolve the disputes and promote remedy for harms that may have resulted. Justice Rapid Response (JRR) offers to strengthen the capacity of the CORE to raise the awareness of impacted groups, civil society and other local stakeholders about the CORE’s complaints mechanism in countries where there is a significant presence of Canadian garment, mining and/or oil/gas companies and where human rights abuses are taking place in these sectors. JRR is the only global facility that provides rapidly deployable experts in a wide range of highly specialized international criminal justice and human rights professions. JRR can provide highly specialized and tailored mentoring to the CORE team. In partnership with the CORE team, JRR Experts will conduct stakeholder mapping research, identify and manage in-country engagement projects, and support the CORE in transitioning from pilot projects into a sustainable global outreach strategy.
