AI Contract Overview
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation’s Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch is seeking a qualified general contractor to provide specialized steel and structural fabrication, maintenance, repair, and modification services for critical water management infrastructure in Southern Alberta. This infrastructure, valued at approximately $10 billion, includes large earthen dams—some classified as Extreme consequence of failure under Canadian Dam Association standards—as well as over 200 kilometers of conveyance canals and related systems serving irrigation districts, municipalities, agricultural users, and recreational partners. The work will primarily focus on sites in the Oldman River basin and Cypress Hills region, including the Waterton-St. Mary, Oldman River Dam, Lethbridge Northern Headworks, Mountain View Leavitt Aetna, Willow Creek, and Cypress Hills areas. The contractor must be proficient in applying CAN/CSA S16 standards and capable of performing tasks such as fabricating and installing ladders, handrails, platforms, grating, bridge sections, fencing, piping, access hatches, valve flanges, and swing gates, as well as providing on-call field welding and repair services. Work may occur at the contractor’s shop, on-site in remote rural locations, or through a combination of both, and will follow project assignments from a prioritized list developed by WIOB. Proposals must include detailed cost estimates, shop drawings, erection plans, and product data, with oversight potentially provided by a provincial Consultant Engineer on a project-by-project basis. The contract requires a team with proven expertise in structural repair to support the long-term integrity and operational continuity of aging water infrastructure, and the contractor will regularly interact with a consistent Contract Manager and Project Manager, while project-specific tasks may involve input from engineering consultants or rely on the contractor’s in-house professional judgment.
