The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of River Protection intends to award a sole source contract modification to EnergySolutions, LLC for specialized glass development testing and data compilation services to support the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant. This work involves expert testing related to the vitrification processing of High Level Waste and Low Activity Waste, critical to the plant’s mission. EnergySolutions will use its Vitreous State Laboratory to conduct key tasks including magnesium substitution studies on low-activity waste glass compositions, bismuth glass testing to address foaming issues in high-level waste glass, and development of an electronic database capturing glass compositions and their measured properties, along with data gathering protocols. The contractor’s unique capabilities and facilities make it the only firm qualified to fulfill these specialized requirements. This contract is valued at approximately $1.5 million and is set to commence no later than May 26, 2009. The award is being made under sole source authority based on the determination that no other suppliers possess the necessary expertise or facilities for these services, as per applicable federal regulations. Although this notice is not a solicitation and no proposals will be accepted, the DOE Office of River Protection remains open to receiving information from other parties to assess their potential for future similar requirements. Questions or comments are directed to the DOE contract specialist managing this action.
