The Grains Research and Development Corporation is seeking a partner to deliver Program 3 of the Barley Net Blotch Initiative, a five-year national effort to combat the escalating threat of net blotches in Australian barley. This disease costs the industry approximately 122 million dollars annually due to yield losses and quality downgrades, driven by the use of susceptible varieties and an over-reliance on specific fungicides. The selected partner will focus on developing regionally validated integrated management strategies and supportive tools to mitigate the disease. Key objectives include driving changes in grower practices through targeted communication, extension services, and rigorous monitoring and evaluation. This program is one of three interlinked initiatives designed to outpace the evolution of net blotch pathogens through improved surveillance, genetics, and management.

Full Description

Net blotches pose an escalating and urgent threat to Australian barley, costing the industry an estimated $122 million each year through disease-related yield losses, downgraded grain quality, and higher fungicide management costs. Widespread planting of susceptible varieties, the practice of growing barley on barley, and an over-reliance on fungicides with a singular mode of action are driving net blotch pathogens to evolve and spread faster than current surveillance, varietal resistance breeding, management and extension efforts can respond. This investment seeks to help Australian barley growers keep ahead of a threat that is moving faster than current tools can handle. It will be delivered through a five-year, nationally focused Barley Net Blotch Initiative (BNBI) comprising three interlinked programs supported by a dedicated coordinator: ? Program 1 - Pathogen surveillance, monitoring, and screening ? Program 2- Host and pathogen genetics ? Program 3 - Integrated disease management and extension ? Program C - Coordination and capacity development GRDC is seeking a capable partner to deliver BNBI Program 3 that will provide regionally validated integrated management strategies and supportive tools for net blotches. And drive grower practice changes through communication, extension and monitoring and evaluation.

Archaeology Consulting Services
Solicitation # 26-122
The City of Delta is issuing solicitation 26-122 to establish a shortlist of qualified archaeology firms to provide professional consulting services on an as-and-when-requested basis. The scope of work includes archaeological investigation, monitoring, reporting, and permitting for various infrastructure and development projects, such as road upgrades and utility replacements, within the City of Delta. All services must comply with the Heritage Conservation Act, and firms must demonstrate eligibility to hold provincial permits, including Multi Assessment Permits and Site Alteration Permits. Key deliverables involve field assessments, coordination with the Provincial Archaeology Branch and First Nations, and the provision of heritage management training for City staff. The selection process utilizes a two-stage qualification method. To be considered, respondents must meet all mandatory criteria, including the timely submission of a signed Proposal Covering Letter. Qualified firms will be evaluated based on proponent capability and experience (50%), methodology (25%), and fees (25%), with minimum scores required for the first two categories. The City emphasizes the importance of professional certification, requiring at least one team member to be in good standing with a recognized organization like the British Columbia Association of Professional Archaeologists. Preference is given to consulting team members with five years of experience and lead archaeologists with ten years of experience. The resulting shortlist will remain valid until January 1, 2025, or for three years from the closing date. Once the list is established, the City will invite these qualified respondents to submit firm-priced tenders for specific projects. Proposals must be submitted as a single PDF to the purchasing department by 2:00 PM Pacific time on November 16, 2026. The pricing structure for the qualification stage includes hourly rates for principal archaeologists, field directors, technicians, and support staff, as well as lump sum rates for permit applications.

Developing acid-soil-tolerant faba bean varieties to expand faba bean adaption.
Solicitation # PROC-9177462
The Grains Research and Development Corporation is seeking proposals for a four-year investment to develop acid-soil-tolerant faba bean varieties. This initiative aims to overcome production constraints caused by soil acidity in Western Australia, South Australia, southern New South Wales, and Victoria, where low pH levels hinder root growth, nitrogen fixation, and overall grain yield. By identifying novel genetic sources of tolerance from Australian and international germplasm and utilizing modern genomic approaches, the project seeks to create breeder-ready germplasm that achieves at least a 10 percent yield advantage over benchmark varieties in soils with a pH below 5.0. The project will focus on delivering high-throughput phenotyping methods, molecular markers, and screening protocols to accelerate the selection of favorable alleles within breeding pipelines. A central requirement is the close collaboration with public and commercial breeding programs to ensure that the resulting genetic resources and tools are practical and rapidly deployable. Ultimately, this investment intends to complement existing soil management and rhizobia treatments to increase the productivity, reliability, and geographic expansion of the Australian faba bean industry.
