The Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grant Programs, administered directly by the Department of Energy, provide funding via cooperative agreements to enhance domestic facilities for battery materials processing, manufacturing, and recycling. The primary objective is to strengthen critical domestic supply chains and increase the production of key critical minerals by up to 15 percent by 2030. Eligible projects focus on processing raw feedstocks, specifically lithium, nickel, and cobalt, as well as recovering materials from manufacturing scrap and end-of-life batteries with an emphasis on black mass and graphite. Additionally, the program supports the manufacture of advanced battery components, including cathode active materials, synthetic graphite, and specialty metals such as copper and aluminum. The program is currently closed and pending its next funding cycle.
