The batteries utilize nickel-cadmium chemistry and are subject to a non-extendable Type I shelf life of 18 months, with MSDS/PSDS documentation mandated under FED-STD-313. Mercury or mercury-containing compounds are strictly prohibited unless part of functional components such as batteries, fluorescent lamps, sensors, or specified instruments, in which case they must be enclosed in shock-proof units with a secondary containment barrier per NAVSEA 5100-003D.
