The U.S. Department of Energy's Richland Operations Office and Fluor Hanford are conducting a workshop to explore potential technologies for remediating the 618-10 and 618-11 burial grounds at the Hanford Site in Richland, Washington. These burial grounds contain a complex mixture of unsegregated transuranic-contaminated radiological and hazardous materials, including pre-1970 waste generated during plutonium production. The workshop, scheduled for June 9-12, 2003, aims to gather technology vendors to share solutions related to waste characterization, stabilization, excavation, retrieval, segregation, treatment, packaging, transportation, health and safety measures, and regulatory compliance. Selected firms will be invited to present their technologies via a poster session on June 9th, with participation limited to 25 vendors representing a broad range of applicable technologies. Interested companies must submit a detailed vendor survey by May 9, 2003, outlining their technology’s applicability, deployment history, contaminants addressed, operational constraints, regulatory challenges, and benefits or limitations in a concise, one-page table format. Attendance and participation are voluntary, with all associated costs borne by the respondents. Importantly, participation in this workshop does not constitute a contract award nor restrict firms from competing in future procurement opportunities. The DOE and Fluor Hanford will use this information to facilitate knowledge exchange, identify remediation challenges, and evaluate potential technology solutions for this and other similar DOE sites.

REMEDIATION OF HANFORD WASTE BURIAL GROUNDS, POC: Christina Richmond, +1 (555) 000-0000, Fax +1 (555) 000-0000, email: contact@example.gov Workshop poster session on potential technologies for remediation of 618-10/-11 burial grounds containing unsegregated transuranic-contaminated radiological and hazardous materials. THIS IS NOT A SOLICITATION ANNOUNCEMENT: . The purpose of this special notice is to gain knowledge of potential technologies for remediation of the 618-10/-11 burial grounds at the U.S. Department of Energy?s Hanford site at Richland, WA. A limited number of firms that respond will be invited to present posters on their technologies at a remedial design technical workshop on June 9-12 in Richland, WA. Interested firms should submit a response to the attached survey for technologies that might address unsegregated transuranic (TRU)-contaminated radiological and hazardous materials at Hanford?s 618-10 and 618-11 burial grounds and other similar DOE sites. Technologies may address waste characterization, stabilization (for removal and handling), excavation, retrieval and segregation, treatment, packaging, transportation, and health and safety protection. The 618-10 and 618-11 burial grounds were operated for disposal of pre-1970 generated TRU and low- to high-activity waste to support defense production of plutonium at the Hanford Site. Documentation of materials placed in the burial grounds is incomplete, but high-activity fission products, low-level, and mixed low-level radioactive waste, plutonium, uranium, and other TRU wastes in various forms are known to have been placed into trenches, pipes and caissons at the waste sites. Along with technical experts from a number of DOE sites, the workshop is designed to gather potential vendors with technologies that might address remediation of the 618-10/618-11 burial ground and similar issues at other DOE sites. Much of the workshop will focus on sharing lessons learned and identifying issues and potential solutions for waste characterization, stabilization (for removal and handling), retrievability and segregation, excavation, treatment requirements, packaging and transportation, final disposal, health and safety issues, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The poster session will take place on Monday, June 9th in the afternoon. Space for vendors is limited, so interested firms must complete the table described below by May 9th and return it to [Christina Richmond with EnviroIssues at contact@example.gov]. Up to 25 vendors that represent a wide range of characterization and excavation technologies will be selected for the poster session. The U.S. Department of Energy ? Richland Operations Office and Fluor Hanford are not responsible for any costs incurred by the respondents for preparation and/or participation in this workshop and poster session. Respondents understand that participation is voluntary and all costs incurred as a result are the responsibility of the respondents. Also note that this vendor selection process will not prevent anyone from bidding on or participating in any subsequent procurement processes. Participation in this workshop does not constitute award of any work for which proposals may be solicited in the future. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Firms submitting vendor surveys shall present their information in a table format for each technology. The length of the submission shall be no more than one (1) page for each technology. The table for each technology shall provide (1) the company name, (2) the company representative, (3) the telephone contact, (4) the physical address of the company, (5) the email address of the company representative, (6) information on what technology has potential application at the 618-10/-11 burial grounds and how it is applicable (e.g., characterization, excavation, handling, transport, etc.), (7) the stage of the technology development (e.g., bench-scale testing, field testing, demonstration, full deployment), (8) technology deployments, including site name, location, and date of each deployment, (9) contaminants addressed by the technology, (10) the types of soils in which the technology works, (11) any major regulatory hurdles, (12) key advantages and disadvantages of the technology, and (13) effectiveness and limitations of the technology. Responses are due 9 May 2003, 5:00 pm Pacific Time. SPONSOR: U.S. Department of Energy, Richland Operations Office, Attn: Kevin Leary, P.O. Box 550, Richland, WA 99352. Fluor Hanford, Attn: Larry Hulstrom, 1200 Jadwin, MSIN E6-35, Richland, WA 99352.
