Caldor Fire Restoration Project Maximum Extent Scenario

The Caldor Fire Restoration Project Maximum Extent Scenario is a forecast initiative led by the El Dorado County Resource Conservation District and the USDA Forest Service to address the aftermath of the 2021 Caldor Fire. Located within the Placerville, Pacific, and Amador Ranger Districts of the Eldorado National Forest in El Dorado and Amador Counties, California, the project aims to reduce public health risks, restore a resilient and diverse ecosystem, and reestablish recreational opportunities. The project is authorized under an Emergency Situation Determination and aligns with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and Executive Order 14225 to increase timber production. The scope of work encompasses a wide range of emergency and restoration activities, including hazard tree abatement, fuels reduction, reforestation through planting and conifer release, and the removal of hazardous fuels and fire-damaged trees. Additional technical requirements include watershed restoration, aquatic wildlife habitat improvement, non-native invasive plant treatments, and various prescribed burning methods. Implementation is guided by a detailed plan featuring Best Management Practices and specific design criteria to protect historic properties and riparian areas. Safety protocols require the use of personal protective equipment for workers and clear signage and colorants to protect the public during treatment applications.
