CARCD/WCB Pollinator & Wildlife Habitat Implementation #2

The Western Shasta Resource Conservation District is leading the CARCD/WCB Pollinator and Wildlife Habitat Implementation #2 project, which focuses on the creation, enhancement, and restoration of pollinator and wildlife habitats across public, private, and working lands in southern Siskiyou County, specifically within the cities of Dunsmuir and Weed. This initiative is classified as a forecast under NAICS code 541620 and has been granted a Class 4 categorical exemption under the California Environmental Quality Act, as the activities are considered minor land alterations with no significant adverse environmental impacts. The scope of work involves comprehensive ecological restoration and wildlife support activities. Key tasks include installing nesting and roosting boxes, wildlife habitat piles, and pond turtle basking structures, as well as implementing bird protection measures such as window coverings and pipe caps. The project also encompasses waterbody management to reduce human-wildlife conflict with beavers through the installation of fencing and culvert covers. Vegetation efforts include the propagation and planting of native species, the use of drip irrigation, and the control of invasive species through manual methods and selective herbicide use. Additionally, the project includes site maintenance such as erosion control, trash removal, and targeted fuels reduction via manual crews, mechanical chipping, and prescribed burning. Monitoring and educational components will be supported by the installation of wildlife cameras and educational signage.
