The Defense Energy Support Center (DESC) is hosting a no-cost Small Business Networking and Training Conference on June 10, 2008, at the Holiday Inn Select Naperville-Lisle in Illinois. This event aims to boost economic activity in the Chicago area and Midwest by increasing small business participation in federal energy-related acquisitions. The conference also encourages collaboration between large businesses and small businesses through the Department of Defense Mentor-Protégé program. Particular interest is placed on small businesses capable of supplying alternative fuels such as biodiesel (B20), ethanol (E85), and synthetic fuel. The event includes three afternoon training and breakout sessions featuring representatives from the Small Business Administration, Illinois Procurement Technical Assistance Center, DLA, and DESC Small Business Offices, as well as a Dun & Bradstreet representative providing guidance on essential government registration processes. DESC, as part of the Defense Logistics Agency, manages large-scale energy procurement for the Department of Defense, with purchases totaling over $13.7 billion in fiscal 2007. The agency’s mission is to deliver cost-effective energy solutions to various government entities. The conference will provide detailed information about procurement activities within key DESC commodity business units and allow vendors to engage directly with DESC energy buyers. For registration assistance or further inquiries, several points of contact are made available, including DESC Small Business Specialists and local SBA and PTAC representatives. This initiative underscores DESC’s commitment to fostering small business involvement in government energy supply contracts while supporting DoD’s broader logistics and operational readiness objectives.
