The County of Santa Cruz is seeking a qualified consulting firm to provide comprehensive civil engineering and environmental services for the replacement of the Rancho Rio Avenue Bridge. The project involves completely replacing the existing single-lane structure with a new two-lane clear span concrete slab bridge, along with standard approaches, which may require additional right of way. During construction, Rancho Rio Avenue will be closed at this location, with local traffic detoured to alternative routes, and utility relocations for water and gas services will be necessary. The existing bridge has been classified as “Scour Critical” and is structurally deficient, with a recent inspection indicating an “Intolerable - Replace” condition, emphasizing the urgency of the project. Funding for the project is partially secured through the California Highway Bridge Program, which will reimburse a portion of the preliminary engineering and construction costs. The County aims to have all plans, specifications, estimates, and permits finalized and ready for construction by summer 2029. The contract, valued between five and fifteen million dollars, was posted on November 12, 2025, with a response deadline of December 10, 2025. The project is managed by the Santa Cruz Public Works / Roads department, and interested firms can contact Tyler Decker for further information. The project emphasizes a comprehensive approach to replacing a critical infrastructure asset to improve safety and structural integrity in the region.
