The notice issued by The Boeing Company, acting as the Lead Systems Integrator for the Future Combat Systems (FCS) program, seeks industry feedback on the feasibility of developing an integrated Multi-Mode Sensor (MMS) subsystem intended for Class III and IV Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) within the FCS. This MMS aims to significantly reduce the UAVs’ onboard weight, thereby enhancing endurance, while delivering advanced surveillance and targeting capabilities. Key performance features sought include the ability to conduct reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition under various conditions such as day/night and adverse weather, detection of surface and buried minefields, identification of camouflaged or concealed enemy forces, wide-area search with high geo-location accuracy, and automated tracking of moving and stationary targets. The system is also expected to support target cueing and ranging for precision-guided munitions, as well as incorporate user-friendly interfaces and automatic image processing. Additional capabilities desired include detection through foliage, emitter mapping, wideband data communications to command and control nodes, detection and classification of chemical weapons, and missile plume detection. Potential technical solutions may involve a combination of multi-mode millimeter wave radar, imaging infrared, laser designator/range finder, active electro-optical sensors, or hyperspectral sensors. The announcement clarifies that this is a request for information only and not a government procurement or solicitation for bids. Responses are requested within 45 days, with further details available via the FCS homepage. The notice directs interested parties to contact Dr. Dan Gilbert of Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems, who manages FCS program subcontracts.
