Coated Yarn Prototyping , and Testing

The NASA Shared Services Center is seeking capabilities and qualifications for a project focused on coated yarn prototyping and testing under NAICS 325211. The primary objective is the development and evaluation of water-soluble CP-1 polyimide coating formulations to support the Artemis Suit Materials project for future lunar Extravehicular Activity suits. The scope of work includes investigating four candidate coating pathways, evaluating white pigment formulation for compatibility, demonstrating coatings on high-performance fibers such as Kevlar, Vectran, or PBO, and performing mechanical testing and microscopy characterization. Key deliverables consist of four formulation samples, three coated fiber sample sets, two coated fabric swatches, and a final technical report. The government intends to issue a sole source contract to AVIENT CORP under FAR 12.102(a), though interested organizations may submit capability statements by September 23, 2026, to determine if the procurement will be made competitive. The performance will take place at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, with an estimated period of performance of 18 to 20 weeks following the authority to proceed.
