The Defense Health Agency, under the Department of Defense, has issued a notice of intent to award a sole source contract to the General Electric Company for the procurement of a 3D Laser Printer. This equipment is designated for use at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, to manufacture surgical guides, small implants, removable partial dentures, and prosthetic components. By bringing these manufacturing capabilities in-house, the agency aims to eliminate the high costs associated with outsourcing these specific dental and prosthetic components. This procurement action is being conducted under FAR 13.106-1(b) and is classified under NAICS code 333249 for Other Industrial Machinery Manufacturing. While the government intends to proceed with General Electric Company, the notice served as a mechanism for other interested parties to demonstrate their capabilities by September 30, 2021, to determine if a competitive procurement would be in the best interest of the government. The final decision to compete the action or proceed with the sole source award remains at the sole discretion of the government.
