Design, Supply and Installation of the STATCOM

The British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority is conducting a Request for Information under solicitation number 25065 for the design, supply, and installation of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) solution. This initiative is intended to support a major load project for a large industrial customer located within the North Thompson and Nicola regions of British Columbia. The project scope involves the design, factory simulation testing, supply, and installation of four STATCOMs at both new and existing substations. Technical requirements specify that equipment must be 24 MVAR or above with a base voltage of 138kV, and the STATCOM controller must be fully compatible with an existing 20-year-old ABB controller for a coordinated operation period of six to eight months. The procurement requires adherence to North American Standards, specifically IEEE C57.12.00 and CSA C88, with seismic qualification according to IEEE 693. Key deliverables include testing and commissioning, on-site training with manuals, and the provision of spare parts and special tools. This current process is for information gathering only and does not constitute a pre-qualification or shortlisting event. BC Hydro intends to issue a formal Request for Proposal in the second quarter of 2027, with a target contract award in the fourth quarter of 2027.
