DOOR: BLOCKING AND BRACING. ITEMS WHICH DO NOT COMPLETELY FILL THE SHIPPING CONTAINER SHALL BE BLOCKED, BRACED, ANCHORED, OR OTHERWISE IMMOBILIZED WITHIN THE CONTAINER. THE PACKAGE CUSHOINING IS DESIGNED TO PROTECT AGAINST SHOCK AND VIBRATION DURING SHIPMENT. THE MATERIAL SELECTED FOR BLOCKING AND BRACING AND THE DESIGN AND APPLICATION OF THE BLOCKING AND BRACING SHALL BE COMPATIBLE WITH THE LOAD TO BE SUPPORTED AND THE SIZE, SHAPE, AND STRENGTH OF BEARING AREAS OF THE ITEM.
WRAPPING MATERIAL (CODE: CA) FOR: Surface abrasion and corrosion. When the surface of the item in contact with the blocking and bracing can be damaged by relative motion between the contacting surfaces or could become corroded as a result of such contact, the contacting surfaces shall be separated by a barrier material meeting protective surface corrosion requirements for wrapping, cushioning and dunnage materials shall be used in contact with unprotected surfaces susceptible to damage from corrosion or deterioration.
CUSHIONING/DUNNAGE MATERIAL (CODE: AD) FOR: Other rigid, low-density materials. Other rigid, low-density materials, such as solid fiberboard conforming to ASTM-D4727 and MIL-F-26862, and rigid foam or cellular plastics conforming to MIL-P-19644, MIL-P-24249 or MIL-P-21929, cut, foamed in place, molded, or otherwise formed as required, may be used for appropriate blocking and bracing applications.

Wood. Wood used for blocking and bracing shall conform to ASTM-D6199. Once wood member of each size and type used in the blocking and bracing shall be tested for moisture content. Structural members [those subject to critical bending stresses) shall conform to class 1 of ASTM-D6199. All other blocking and bracing members shall conform to class 3. Whenever possible, wood blocks or braces shall be placed so that the load is applied against the end grain of the member. Ends of braces shall be socketed or fitted and secured into appropriate notches in load-bearing members.
Plywood. Plywood used for blocking and bracing shall conform to A-A-55057, group A, (grade 3-4, type II) or group B, (C-D, interior with exterior glue).

REQUIREMENTS FOR PACKAGE DESIGNS AND PERFORMANCE
PER MIL-STD-2073-1, PARAGRAPH 5.2.3 (a-j) AS APPLICABLE TO PRODUCT. PACKAGE DESIGN SHALL PROMOTE SAFE DELIVERY AS A PERFORMANCE CRITERIA.
HARDWARE: All loose hardware shall be contained within a sealed container (bag/box) and the highest applicable preservation method (based on physical characteristics of items) shall be applied to ensure items will not be damaged or experience corrosion. In addition, packaged hardware shall be placed within each individual unit container to ensure items do not damage (dent, scratch, nick, etc.) the part or any components therein.
ATTENTION: Hardware for shipments cannot be shipped in bulk. It is not an acceptable practice. Material must arrive in serviceable condition and meet the contractual quantity unit pack requirements. Thus, requiring no additional sorting, packaging, and/or marking by user or depot personnel.
SPECIAL MARKINGS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD-129 AND ASTM D5445 (PICTORIAL MARKINGS FOR HANDLING GOODS) TO ENSURE SAFE DELIVERIES.
