Endoscopy System

The contract involves a collaboration between the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) and the Division of Imaging, Diagnostics, and Software Reliability (DIDSR) within the Food and Drug Administration. The objective is to acquire an advanced endoscopy system that will significantly enhance scientific research capacity across the center and the agency. The endoscope will be instrumental for OSEL researchers in developing and refining bench testing methods critical for assessing the safety and effectiveness of endoscopy devices. This equipment will also support testing and development efforts related to color performance and artificial intelligence (AI) standalone test development within an AI/machine learning project led by Feng Yang and Wei-Chung Cheng. The purchase of this endoscopy system is crucial because it enables OSEL to formulate practical and adequate testing methodologies for regulatory science trials (RSTs) that sponsors can adopt. Furthermore, it will facilitate the evaluation of how various properties and components of endoscopy devices affect AI and machine learning model performance. Without obtaining this system, OSEL's ability to provide reliable recommendations on testing methods and to assess AI/ML influences on endoscopy technology would be severely limited, impacting the broader regulatory evaluation process. The contract is forecasted by the FDA and remains open for future acquisition planning, with designated points of contact for program and contracting matters.
