English Meadow Beaver Conservation Translocation

The English Meadow Beaver Conservation Translocations project, managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, aims to re-establish a breeding population of North American beavers within the Middle Yuba River watershed across Sierra and Nevada counties. Over a three to five year period, the project involves capturing family groups and individuals from healthy source populations, performing necessary quarantines, and releasing them into the valley watershed on private, permitted property. To evaluate the success of the population establishment, all beavers will be uniquely tagged, with a specific portion fitted with transmitters for monitoring. The primary objective is to engineer an extensive wetland complex to achieve significant ecological and hydrological improvements. Expected outcomes include increased carbon sequestration, reduced downstream sediment transport, the repair of channel incisions, and the reconnection of streams to their floodplains. Additionally, the project seeks to enhance riparian vegetation, create critical habitats for obligate species, increase groundwater recharge, and improve summer baseflows. These efforts are intended to increase fuel moisture during wildfire seasons to create wildlife refugia and wildfire buffers. The project is classified as exempt under California Code of Regulations title 14, sections 15307 and 15308, as it focuses on the restoration and enhancement of natural resources.
