This contract involves conducting a detailed study to compare the design and cost implications of dry coating versus traditional wet coating processes for lithium-ion battery cathodes, specifically focusing on NMC811 materials. The analysis aims to generate quantitative data on the potential manufacturing advantages, challenges, and overall feasibility of adopting dry coating techniques in commercial-scale production. The study will evaluate three plant sizes with capacities of 5 GWh, 25 GWh, and 50 GWh per year, providing insights into how dry coating could impact plant design, operational efficiency, and costs across different production scales. The work is commissioned by Argonne National Laboratory, a DOE contractor, with a project posting date of May 8, 2025, and a response deadline of May 13, 2025. The contract falls under NAICS code 541330, indicating a focus on engineering and scientific consulting services. Key points of contact include Jackie Arriaga and Parker Hawk, who can be reached via email or phone for further details. The findings from this study are intended to inform the laboratory’s understanding of dry coating technology’s potential benefits and challenges, supporting future advancements in lithium-ion battery manufacturing.

This requirement is for a study to estimate the change in design and cost of a LIB cell plant that uses dry coating of the cathode electrode with respect to the more common wet coated electrodes used today. The data and analysis will be used for three plant sizes rated for 5, 25, and 50 GWh per year capacity plants. This work is expected to provide the Laboratory with a quantitative estimate of the advantages and challenges of using dry coated NMC811 cathode layers over the more common wet coating process.

Custom R&D Industrial Furnace
Solicitation # 7-S176-Q-00012-00
Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is soliciting a firm fixed price contract under solicitation 7-S176-Q-00012-00 for the design, fabrication, delivery, installation, and commissioning of a custom industrial R&D furnace. The furnace is intended for testing fuel-flexible burners using natural gas and hydrogen blends from 0 to 100 percent H2, supporting both direct and indirect-fired configurations. Key technical specifications include a maximum continuous firing rate of 5 MMBtu/hr, a maximum bulk temperature of 2400 degrees Fahrenheit, and the inclusion of 70 threaded instrumentation ports and high-temperature optical windows. The project is expected to take approximately six months, with a target completion date of June 2027 and a planned award date in January 2027. Award will be made based on the Lowest Price Technically Acceptable (LPTA) basis, with technical acceptability evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Offerors must provide a completed ANL-70 Request for Quotation, technical compliance responses, country of origin information per FAR 52.225-1, and signed ANL-70B representations and certifications. Performance involves fabrication at the supplier's facility and installation at ANL Building 362 in Lemont, Illinois. Acceptance is contingent upon successful commissioning with a natural gas fired burner for at least two hours, ensuring the exterior shell temperature does not exceed 176 degrees Fahrenheit. The contract includes various FAR and DEAR clauses regarding labor standards, small business utilization, and safety, and requires specific insurance certifications and a High Risk Job Safety Analysis Form ESH-209 before a Notice to Proceed is issued.
