The County of San Diego has approved a 50-year aviation lease with SkyVisionX, Inc. for the use of existing hangar facilities at Gillespie Field Airport in El Cajon, California, with the lease set to commence on September 1, 2025, and terminate on August 31, 2075. As part of the agreement, SkyVisionX will pay $1.4 million upfront for the hangar structures already on the property and will make ongoing monthly base rent payments throughout the lease term. The lessee has committed to investing $9.3 million in capital improvements over a five-year period, which significantly exceeds the $2.7 million minimum requirement, adding long-term value to the facility. Any future capital improvements proposed by the lessee and approved by the Director of Airports will be subject to California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) review, though the initial lease action qualifies for a categorical exemption under Section 15301, as it involves no expansion of existing use. The County’s Director of Airports, Jamie Abbott, serves as the primary point of contact for oversight and administration.
