Griffith Park- Acquisition & Restoration of the Historic Merri Go ‘Round

The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks is undertaking a multi-year project for the acquisition and restoration of the historic Merry Go Round located at 4730 N. Crystal Springs Dr, Los Angeles, California. Built in 1926 by the Spillman Engineering Corporation and relocated to Griffith Park in 1937, the carousel is a rare 4-Abreast model featuring 68 wood-carved and bejeweled horses, two chariots, an elaborate ceiling kit, and a Stinson 165 Military Band Organ capable of playing over 1,500 songs. The project focuses on the rehabilitation, preservation, and mechanical repair of the structure to ensure its reopening and ongoing operation for park patrons, with funding intended to be sustained through fundraising campaigns. All restoration and conservation work must be performed in strict accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and the 1995 Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring, and Reconstructing Historic Buildings. The project is classified under NAICS code 811420 and has been granted a Notice of Exemption under Class 16 CCR Title 14 Sec. 15325(e) and 15331. Elena Maggioni, the Environmental Supervisor, serves as the primary point of contact for this effort to preserve the historic mechanical integrity of the asset.
