The Highlands Elementary School Improvements Project involves comprehensive upgrades to campus facilities in Santa Clarita, California, with a focus on enhancing outdoor recreational and functional spaces. The northeastern portion of the campus will see the replacement of the existing grass field with synthetic turf and the installation of a new 10-foot-wide concrete walking track encircling the field, connecting to the southern play courts. A native planting area will be introduced along the western edge near the playground and lunch shelter, and a new irrigation system will support the turf. In the northern area, a fabric shade structure will be erected above the playground, with surrounding asphalt removed and replaced, new swing equipment installed, play markings refreshed, and outdated tetherball posts upgraded. The play courts in the center of campus will undergo asphalt replacement, new striping, a new ball wall, and improved access ramps to adjacent classroom buildings. Temporary relocation of storage units during construction and subsequent return to original locations is planned. Further improvements extend to the southern portion of the campus, where concrete paving will be replaced with new play markings and a chain-link cage area for equipment, alongside upgraded classroom ramps and renewed sod. Drainage enhancements are scheduled for two locations south and east of Building B, the administration and classroom building. Asphalt surfacing in the northwestern and southwestern parking lots will also be replaced. The entire project is divided into two phases: the first phase, occurring between June and July 2026, includes the field turf replacement, walking track construction, and irrigation installation; the second phase, set for June and July 2027, encompasses the asphalt replacements, shade structure installation, play court upgrades, parking lot resurfacing, and final landscaping touches. The Saugus Union School District is overseeing the project through its Director of Facilities, Kathie Pisano, with all activities designed to modernize safety, accessibility, and usability across the campus.
