Background/Intro The FDA Winchester Engineering and Analytical Center (WEAC) is responsible for analyzing regulated products for radioactive contaminants and samples in response to radiological emergencies. To fulfill this responsibility and to ensure an appropriate sample capacity and high throughput during an emergency event, another ultra-low level liquid scintillation counter is need. Specifications of the liquid scintillation counter needed to fulfill our method data quality objectives are listed below. II. Minimum Characteristics A. Salient Characteristics 1. Must contain a passive radiation shield to attenuate most of the environmental gamma radiation with the following specifications - Made of low radioactivity Boliden lead 2. Must contain an active shielding technology to remove natural background fluctuations - Ultra-low background noise photomultiplier tubes for coincident sample counting - sample chamber is fully enclosed inside the passive radiation shield - Detectors are optically isolated from each other to provide background reduction 3. Sample detector that operates in anticoincidence with the guard detector - Automatic cancellation of non-sample events during sample counting 4. Multi-channel analyzers - Capable of saving multiple spectra for each sample - Capable of saving rejected counts - 12-bit linear analog-digital conversion - 0.0038 keV resolution in the lowest range - Delayed coincidence circuitry for 3H and other low energy beta emitters to detect interfering random coincidence signal, as chemiluminescence. 5. Alpha/beta pulse discriminator/analyzer for simultaneous acquisition of pure alpha and beta spectra from samples containing both types of radiation - Advanced pulse shape analyzer for sensitive liquid scintillation alpha counting - Alpha backgrounds reduction via alpha/beta discriminator setting - Ability to detect alpha emitters even in 100,000 excess of beta radiation 6. Pulse Amplitude Comparison - Allows ability to reject crosstalk between phototubes and background events produced in phototubes - Identifies true sample events which have much less variation in amplitude ratio 7. Must have anti-static cylinders as sample holders and light shutters to cover sample as it is raised into the sample chamber to reduce static electricity 8. Low Activity External Standard for Fast Quench Correction - High energy, low activity gamma source - An index of quench based on external standard quench parameter B.
