AI Contract Overview
This SBIR Phase II project, titled In Situ Isotope Analyzer for Lunar and Planetary Science, focuses on developing a compact, high-performance water isotope analyzer for in-situ analysis on lunar and planetary bodies. The technology utilizes a novel laser spectroscopic technique featuring a hollow core fiber optic gas cell with a reflective inner coating, which allows for highly sensitive trace-gas and isotope analysis with minimal sample requirements. This design ensures a low size, weight, and power package suitable for various NASA mission scales, including Flagship and Discovery missions. The primary goal is to increase the Technology Readiness Level for NASA insertion while simultaneously targeting commercial markets for robust, field-capable isotopic analyzers, such as drone-borne sensing and unattended environmental monitoring. The project aligns with NASA's planetary science goals and the Planetary Decadal Survey, specifically aiding in the search for the requirements for life and understanding the beginnings of the solar system through the analysis of isotope ratios like D/H, 13C/12C, and 34S/32S. Key Phase II objectives include the assembly of a prototype analyzer and a sampling front-end to demonstrate a complete system under simulated conditions. Deliverables for this effort consist of a complete water isotope sensor prototype, operational and post-processing software, a prototype operation manual, and comprehensive progress and final reports. The contract is a Total Small Business Set-Aside under the NASA SBIR/STTR Program.

Full Description
Benefits: Isotopic data can provide information on the potential source of water in the solar system, as well as evidence for life beyond Earth. The development of the proposed in situ instrument is applicable to NASA’s planetary science goals summarized in the Planetary Decadal Survey. Such instruments and technologies will play a crucial role for NASA missions to various planetary bodies. This includes addressing two of NASA’s major themes: (1) understanding solar system beginnings and (2) searching for the requirements for life. Sensors resulting from this project will provide an extremely attractive alternative to isotope analyzers. The ability to obtain high-quality isotope data with a small SWaP sensor will be appealing for a range of environmental monitoring applications including but not limited to drone-borne sensing and unattended field monitoring.
