AI Contract Overview
The U.S. Geological Survey plans to award a non-competitive purchase order to Thermo Electron North America, now known as Thermo Fisher Scientific, for the UNITY ESSENTIAL SUPPORT PLAN-APG-MASS SP maintenance service covering the ELEMENT 2 ICPMS mass spectrometer located at the Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry Laboratory in Reston, Virginia. The service period will span one year starting July 1, 2026, and is necessary due to the instrument’s proprietary design, with Thermo Fisher retaining exclusive control over all components, including electronic boards, software architecture, and service protocols, ensuring only the original manufacturer can provide authorized support. The procurement is classified under NAICS code 811210 with a size standard of $34 million, and while FAR 5.207 allows any responsible source to submit a response, the agency has explicitly stated this is for informational purposes only and intends to proceed with a sole-source award under FAR 13.106-1(b), limiting competition to Thermo Fisher Scientific. All submissions must be emailed to sruggles@usgs.gov by the deadline of May 15, 2026.
