Weak magnetic anomaly detection for defence and security
Solicitation # EN578-24ISC4/92
Innovation, Sciences et Développement économique Canada is seeking proposals for a novel magnetometer, utilizing quantum, classical, or hybrid technology, to enhance magnetic anomaly detection for defense and security. The goal is to develop a portable hardware and software system capable of sensing nanotesla or femtotesla signals with high sensitivity and specificity. Mandatory requirements include a minimum sensitivity of 500 picotesla, the ability to detect specific ferromagnetic targets at 10 meters with a 95 percent true positive rate, and a total system weight under 15 kilograms. The device must operate on less than 50 watts of power, provide readouts within 200 milliseconds, and be capable of sensing through paramagnetic barriers like walls. The solicitation is open from October 30, 2026, to November 20, 2026. Successful candidates may be awarded a Phase 2 contract with maximum funding of 2 million CAD over a duration of up to 24 months. The final product must demonstrate a per-unit production cost of under 60,000 CAD. While the initial prototype is intended for indoor use, additional points are awarded for solutions that offer greater standoff range, improved environmental robustness for Canadian climates, and a silent operational signature.
