The U.S. Army RDECOM Acquisition Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, plans to negotiate a sole source Cost Plus Fixed-Fee contract with General Dynamics Robotics Systems (GDRS) to reduce the weight of the M56 Smoke Generator for integration onto the armored M1152A1 High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). The M56 Smoke Generator, previously mounted on the M1113 HMMWV, provides significant visual and infrared obscuration capabilities, with the current model weighing 4,600 pounds. The goal is to develop a lighter system—under 3,340 pounds—to fit the payload capacity of the M1152A1, achieving a minimum weight reduction of 1,260 pounds. The redesigned smoke generator must still deliver effective obscuration: 30 minutes for both visual and IR, and optionally 60 minutes of visual when no IR material is carried. The scope of the contract includes complete system design, prototype construction, testing, supportability planning, packaging, storage requirements, configuration management, and manufacturing and modification of eight units to be mounted on fully armored M1152A1 vehicles. GDRS, the sole producer of the original 561 M56 systems, has in-depth knowledge of the unit’s performance and prior experience with weight reduction efforts. Delivery of the eight redesigned systems is scheduled for November 2008. Queries regarding the contract can be directed to the assigned contract specialist at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
