Specifically, the results of the market research concluded that only one vendor was able to provide the equipment based on the Government's unique requirements. Leica Microsystems, Inc. is the only vendor capable of providing the LMD 6500 and Macrofluo Z16 APO in accordance with the specifications provided in the Government's statement of need. Leica Microsystems is the only manufacturer that has developed a laser microdissection instrument which uses a controllable high intensity laser beam and gravitational force to respectively dissect and collect tissue mounted onto glass slides as well as living cells. These features are unique to the LMD 6500 instrument and are not found in any other instrument available. The Macrofluo Z16 APO will function as an extension of the LMD 6500, via shared objectives, hardware and software. Without these features in microdissection and imaging equipment, the NIDA IRP project aims cannot be achieved. Leica Microsystems, Inc. is the only contractor authorized to provide this equipment to the NIDA IRP in this region of the United States.
