Mission Springs Water District Groundwater Quality Protection Program Septic to Sewer Project

Mission Springs Water District is undertaking a long-term initiative to replace failing septic systems with a modern sewer infrastructure to protect groundwater quality across its service area. The project involves the installation of 146,200 linear feet of 8-inch diameter sewer main lines and approximately 2,500 new 4- to 6-inch service laterals, all designed to connect around 2,600 parcels to the municipal wastewater system. Over 2,040 existing on-site septic tanks will be permanently abandoned to mitigate contamination risks to potable groundwater supplies. Construction activities will focus on targeted sub-areas including A, D-3, G, H, I, J-2, K, and the North Indian Canyon Drive / I-10 corridor, with work confined to roadways and existing rights-of-way to minimize disruption. The entire project is scheduled to unfold over two decades, with each sub-area addressed in approximately 30-month cycles, ensuring phased implementation and manageable resource allocation. The effort is a critical component of the District’s groundwater quality protection strategy, aiming to improve public health and environmental sustainability in the Desert Hot Springs region of California.
