AI Contract Overview
Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes the development of a Multi-Component In-Line Gas Analyzer (MIGA) designed to monitor the quality of process streams generated by in situ resource utilization (ISRU) systems on the Moon and Mars. This shoebox-sized instrument integrates ruggedized optical gas cells, multiplexed laser sources, and miniaturized electronics to detect major gases such as oxygen, methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. Additionally, the MIGA is engineered to identify trace impurities, including hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, and water vapor, at sub-ppm levels. By providing high-sensitivity measurements, the technology aims to ensure the purity of essential chemicals required for life support and propellant production, thereby preventing infrastructure corrosion and ensuring the safety of human consumption. The project aligns with NASA solicitation H10.04 regarding in-line commodity purity analysis and offers significant utility for long-duration space habitats. Beyond its primary application in monitoring ISRU processes like Sabatier or solid-oxide electrochemical cells, the technology has potential uses in cabin air quality monitoring. Outside of space exploration, the MIGA holds commercial value for various terrestrial industries, including oil refineries, natural gas plants, hydrogen production facilities, and carbon sequestration sites. This small business set-aside project seeks to accelerate the certification of field-proven technologies for space applications to maximize the efficiency and safety of extraterrestrial resource production.

Full Description
Benefits: The potential NASA applications include the monitoring of ISRU process streams for quality and safety control and maximization of process efficiency. ISRU processes may include carbo-thermal reactors, solid-oxide electrochemical cell, and Sabatier, Haber-Bosch, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The proposed technology will support future missions to the Moon and Mars for long-term habitats requiring the production of chemicals for life support and propellants using lunar regolith, water, and atmospheric gases. Cabin air quality monitoring is another application of the technology. The non-NASA applications may include oil refineries, industrial chemical processing plants, natural gas plants, gas wholesalers, renewable natural gas producers and buyers, hydrogen production plants, and carbon sequestration sites.
